Out on the Tiles by Led Zeppelin is not an easy song on the bass. The difficulty comes from the fact that the original recording is, in all honesty, a bit sloppy with its timing.
This is the original studio track:
…so when a 12-year-old kid is able to cover this song, that’s actually a pretty big achievement:
What were you doing when you were 12?
BONUS: Drum backing track for you to play along with!
Below is a guy who – on vintage Ludwig kit, no less – banged out a spot-on drums-only Out on the Tiles. As far as a play-along track is concerned for a bass player, it doesn’t get any better than this.
Nice. My son is 12 and plays. With a week of practice he could do this but probably not with as much flourish as this kid.
Just love the kid’s drawing on the wall…of what seems to be ELVIS!!!!
I was learning to play the guitar. That’s what every kid in my town was doing back in ’69 / 70. So, when 1980 rolls around you figured the math, the guitarist to gig ratio and switch to bass and life is good with boom in the room.
He’s having fun – that’s what counts!
When i was 12 I was learning crossroads and spoonful live taking lessons and learing to read music.
Good job! Keep it up.
I was able to follow my heart until 15 when I got my first job. At that point I took my Mom by the hand, went to the first music store I could find and spent $1500 on a pro quality bass and amp (in 1967 dollars) and 6 months later played my first gig with a neighborhood band and could play every track on Led Zep’s debut album. It fully changed my life. I’m 63 now and still playing and loving bass.
I was playing in a classic rock cover band at 11. Covering Pink Floyd, GnR, Poison, Black Sabbath, Cream, The Police, Led Zeppelin etc. Ahh… simpler times!
