This week’s BotW is Beatles-inspired and “goes a mile deep” in a really good way.
Builder Dave Jorgensen writes:
I’m a luthier and huge Beatles fan. I decided to take on the project of building a tribute to each of the Beatles, not for sale, but just for me to have.
The Beatles guitars have always fascinated me. I tried to incorporate some classic details about each one of the fabs in their guitar.
For McCartney I went back and forth between a Ric style and a Hofner. I settled on the Hofner, but wanted it to be different.
I went with an ebony fretless fingerboard. The neck is 3 piece, maple, walnut, maple. The body has a curly cottonwood top. Not your classic guitar wood, but the figuring in it is outrageous and looks a mile deep. It ends up that with the figure, it approaches maple in density.
The back is completely hollowed-out black walnut.
I built a router duplicator to carve the top and back using another Hofner as a guide.
I built the bridge and tailpiece from ebony and aluminum.
I wanted the top to be very simple so I went with an under-saddle pickup, with the controls mounted near the output jack.
As decoration I made a waterslide decal of Paul’s knighthood medal and ribbon for the front of the headstock.
The finish is nitro lacquer with a medium brown tint. It plays beautifully and I’m really happy with how it turned out.
The “mile deep” look is definitely one that ended up looking spectacular. Well done, Dave!

I’m a professional luthier who takes great pride in thinking “out-of-the-box” and using many inspirations in my builds. You sir, have shamed me :). What a BEAUTIFUL interpretation of Sir Paul’s wonderful instrument. An outstanding example of working art.

Exceptional work, a masterpiece for sure. Congratulations.
Great job, tastefully done, would LOVE to play her on a few Beatles songs myself 🙂
Nice work and idea, but where are the F-holes and/or pickup(s). How do you get this work of art to sound with or without an amp?
+1 to all of the above.
Awesome work and I’m sure it sounds and plays as great as it looks. I have a Linc Luthier and have not thought of ever getting anything else until I saw this….whew I feel like a traitor already!
