[Bass of the Week] J Willard Guitars Trotter 6

See the business listing for this bass builder here

This week’s bass guitar of the week is truly a badass 24-fret 6-string beast.

Builder Jason Willard writes:

The Trotter 6 String Bass is my own design I was looking to build a unique custom bass that kicks ass.

The Trotter Bass is a 35-inch scale 24 fret through neck bass with a zebra wood top, curly maple mid layer and an American walnut back.

The neck is five piece hard maple and wenge with a pau ferro fretboard and a zebra wood top layer on the headstock.

The neck has two carbon fiber stiffening rods and a double action truss rod.

The frets are stainless steel and the nut is made of bone.

The body’s top and back have been hand shaped and contoured for a great feel that’s super comfortable and hard to stop feeling.

The back of the neck was custom shaped by hand, from the 12th fret it starts to get thicker at the top and tapers thinner at the bottom to enhance the hand position on the wider portion of the neck.

The headstock has been contoured and shaped as well to create a visual flow and echo the body, the entire bass has an oil finish.

The pickups are Nordstrand Big Single Six‘s active single coil double magnets for great tone and output, it also has an Aguilar EQB III SC Preamp with two switches one for active/passive mode and one that switches the MID Frequency between 250Hz and 600Hz.

The electronic controls are Volume, Tone, Bass, Middle and Treble, the knobs are made of water buffalo horn and really go well with the hardware and wood.

The final setup and technical assistance was done by Breton Hansen of Breton Guitar Co. in Orem Utah, Thank you Breton! This is a one of a kind bass that I’m very proud of. Enjoy!

  1. Interesting bridge piece posting across the the B E and A strings. What’s that all about?
P.s. looks really nice. Well done.

    • mostly to add contour to the bridge, on a technical note the center strings play better longer. I hope that was what you were referring to… Thanks!

    • I’m asking $3000, pretty reasonable considering what you’re getting compared to an equivalent custom big name. And this thing sounds awesome! I’m working on a demo video now and this bass sounds so good!

  2. Just curious but do Water Buffalo shed their horn like deer shed antlers. Or how do you come across them? I’ve always wanted to use a snapping turtle shell for hardware on my builds but have no idea where to get one. Beautiful bass also! I would love to run it on my rig and see all the wonderful sounds and textures she has locked in there. I see many nice basses on here. But! This build inspires me again the way the Alembic Mission Controll bass does! Fine Craftsmanship my friend! Beautiful indeed!

    • Thank you for your awesome comments! As far as water buffalo horn goes there are commercialy available in wood working supply stores etc… I Don’t think they shed their horns but it’s probably a by product of a meat industry like leather. Snapping turtle…. No idea on that, I wonder if they are protected?
This is really an awesome sounding an well balanced bass, pretty light too for its size.
