The week’s feature bass is a Alembic-inspired 6-string, and yes, there is a video demo of it below so you can hear what it sounds like (cool!)

Builder Nathan Kangas writes:

This Alembic inspired single piece six string bass is custom build for Nicholas Skinnell. He wanted an extended range bass that would be flexible enough to allow him to play many styles of music and handle alternate tunings.

The neck and body of this massive 52-inch long bass with a 35-inch scale are carved from a solid billet of Bubinga and it features Wenge fretboard with custom tree of life inlay. This inlay theme is matched on the headstock and the control cavity cover of the bass.

For electronics, this bass features EMG 45 CS pickups and an EMG Active Balance control. To round out the electrical system we installed the European version of the Spector Tone Pump that will boost the Bass and Treble.

Unable to find a desirable bridge design, a Kahler 2450-N6 six-string Bass Bridge was modified so it only utilizes the saddles directly mounted to the body for extra punch.

The tuning machines are Hipshot with two Hipshot Bass X-tenders added to accommodate alternate tunings on the fly.

The nut is fossil mammoth ivory which was selected for its appearance as well as the low friction when using the Hipshot Bass X-tenders.

    • Yes, it’s legal. The current laws prohibiting trade of elephant and rhinoceros ivory were created to protect these living animal populations. Because mammoths are extinct, such protection is not needed nor is it extended to them.

  1. Yes Mammoth Ivory is legal. Elephan Ivory is not. The reason iris because Elephants are protected and use of their Ivory would encourage hunting of the animal. There are a number of differences between the two types of ivory. The main difference is in the grian differences in the grain. Becuse of these differences it is also not possible to pass elephant ivory off as Mammoth Ivory which keeps in place the protection of elephants.

  2. That is a beautiful work of art! Nicely done!

It looks as though a few more windings on the B would help clear the fancy nut though.

    Nice work!

    • Yeah a set of slightly longer strings would have been nice but it seems to function fine as is and the next set of strings well who knows
