Is the Bass Envelope Filter the ultimate for funk tone?

Note up front, yes, we sell this, but that’s not the reason for this article.

When it comes to envelope filtering, you have two ways of going about it. Either you use a manual bass wah pedal that you rock back and forth with your foot, or you use an envelope filter pedal.

At first glance, the pedal could be considered “auto-wah” (and this is said in the video above), but that really doesn’t adequately cover what the pedal does.

One of the envelope filter’s greatest strengths, particularly with slap bass playing, is that the filter “pops” properly, and that’s something you simply cannot get with a manual wah pedal even with the fastest of feet.

Is the envelope filter pedal the ultimate in funk tone?

Well, to say it’s the ‘ultimate’ is admittedly a bit of a stretch, especially being there are super-funky bass players who can funk it out with zero effects – but – the M82 is genuinely a fun pedal to have. And for those of you who play funk regularly and needed ‘a little extra’ to cut through the mix, the “poppy” sound of an M82 set just right might be just what you were looking for.

Do you use the M82 or like envelope filter pedal, and does it work for you?

Post a comment or two with your experience(s).

  1. I have had other envelope pedals in the past, none really seemed usable in a live gigging situation. Too many knobs to tweak and get yourself lost with. The M82 is a different… It is very usable live. It doesn’t have lots of different oscillations or sound waves but the one it has is really good. I run mine on a blend unit. 75%wet signal 25%dry signal just to preserve the low end integrity.

  2. I absolutely love my M82. I bought mine after owning an MXR Auto Q that really didn’t do so hot with bass. The M82 kills it, and it pairs with my Boss OC-2 for some pretty sick synth sounds.
