Hipshot Ultralite tuners work well on a vintage bass

When refurbishing or restoring a vintage bass, sometimes it’s necessary to use new parts because the old parts have simply worn out or have become unusable from sitting too long and not being used enough.

This is an instance where new parts were used on an old bass, and it worked out quite nicely.

What you see pictured above and in the video below is a 1978 Gretsch Committee Bass. The bridge has been replaced with a new Hipshot bridge, and the tuners are Hipshot Ultralites. The pickup was replaced with a TV Jones Thunderblade, and the owner was able to source a new-old-stock Gretsch pick guard.

This refurbishing ended up looking good, the bass appears to play well, and the tuners in particular work very well both in performance and the overall look.

While it’s nice to see exotic and super-exotic basses, it’s also nice to see some vintage every so often with “mild” upgrades (meaning nothing too crazy, but rather just made to be functional and play well).

  1. Wow im so happy I stumbled upon this. I saw a committee bass at a friend’s studio once. I asked but nobody could tell me the model name. It’s a stunningly elegant and simple looking instrument. I will sure be adding it to my wish list now. On the topic of this thread Hipshot products in my opinion are a great addition to any instrument. All of their products I have used are top notch. No complaints on quality, durability or finish!
