[Bass Player of the Week] Pato Muñoz

The feature bassist this week is Pato Muñoz from Madrid, Spain!

We interviewed Pato, asked him about his gear and musical influences, and this is what he had to say.

(Also be sure to check the performance video after the interview below.)

What is the make and model bass you are playing seen in your video?

The bass of the video is an Elrick Platinum Series Thru-Neck e-Volution 6 strings, with Pickups and pre Bartolini and Hipshot hardware.

What was your first bass guitar, and do you still own it?

My first bass was a Kuc SB model Black made in Argentina. I don’t have it anymore because it did not work well, so I sold it to buy a better one.

Who are your main musical influences and why?

The Heavy Weather album from Weather Report was a big influence, I had never listened such a beautiful music (except of the classic composers of course). Since then, I’ve listened to Michael Brecker, Chick Corea and a long list of others.

Which styles of music do you enjoy playing most?

What I most like is to mix styles, that’s the reason what I called my work “Jazz World Fusion”, although in my CD “Todos los barrios” you can sense some details of Rock or Classic Music.

Do you prefer to play live or in the studio?

I try to have fun in everything I do, but I prefer to play live as it is never the same performance twice.

What is the first thing you teach when teaching others to play the bass?

The first that I try to do is to transmit the value of loving the music. The art is a way to express feelings and not a competition. I insist to work on the right hand technique. A bass player can play virtuously or just play the important notes, but a bass player must have the groove, a good sound and have a good time.

What is the next custom bass guitar that you would like to own?

An Oscar Prat.

  1. If you still have a day job, I think you can safely quit it, haha! Very fine playing there, my fellow bass man!
