Gig Bag Essentials: Duct Tape

A bass players gig bag is his trusty side kick. It’s their war chest heading into battle. When you’re at a gig there is almost no telling what kind of curveball could be thrown your way. And your only tools are going to be what you’ve got in the gig bag, so you have to keep it well stocked.

The first in our series of Gig Bag Essentials is really a life essential. Duct tape (or gaffers tape). You’ll need it. You won’t know why, you won’t know how, but it will save you.

Need some cable management to keep you from tripping up and taking a nose dive into the drum set? Duct tape. Broken strap? Duct tape. Keep that set list from escaping? Duct tape. Forget to wear a belt? Duct tape.

Duct tape will come up big for you, so just trust us and keep it stocked in your gig bag. You can thank us later.

  2. Actually, I’d pack a roll of gaffer’s tape as it won’t leave residue the same way as duct tape, and it’s just as strong. For me, the most important items in my gig bag are my pocket-sized mag flashlight (especially helpful while playing the “where does this cable connect” game), my Leatherman tool (I got one with a wire stripper – man, that’s helpful), a handful of pens and notepaper (oh, another set list you say?), and 1 or 2 spare leads (instrument cables) and stomp box connectors.

  3. Gaffers tape is not the same as duct tape! Duct tape is for ducts, Do yourself and others a favor and get a roll of gaffers tape.

  4. Definitely spend the extra money for gaffer’s tape. Some venues, for good reason, won’t let you use duct tape on their stages. Also, your cables won’t end up with sticky duct tape residue.
