This week’s selection is from Dave. Wanting to do something a little different, he found his inspiration in the wood. Here’s what he says:<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’ve built a few electric guitars and was looking for a new project. This time around I wanted to do something different so I started thinking about a bass. One day I ran across a large piece of tulipwood at a local cabinet shop that was screaming “fretboard” at me so that became my inspiration. I wanted to try out a multi-scale, so I settled on 37″\/34″ for my original design. It took a little more than a year to complete.<\/p>\n

The body is swamp ash with a maple top and a thin layer of padauk in between.
\nThe laminated neck is 11 pieces of mahogany, maple, pakauk and rosewood.
\nThe fretboard is tulipwood.<\/p>\n

I wound my own pickups. They are similar to J-bass pickups<\/a> except I needed to adjust the pole spacing to fit since they lay at an angle to the strings.<\/p>\n

I used an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp<\/a> for electronics. The controls are volume, blend, treble, mid and bass with a pull-out on the mid control to change the center frequency. A pull-out on the volume control switches from active to passive mode.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
