With 1,000+ gigs over 10 years, he’s got some stories to tell…

I started out on Bass in 1981, after helping a singer friend start putting a band together. It’s the familiar story of too many guitarists and no bassist. I decided to give it a shot and went out and picked up an Ovation Magnum bass & a Sunn Beta Bass combo amp.

It didn’t take me long to find that I had found my calling and it’s been a fun ride so far. Since 1981, I have been in three Classic rock cover bands, the latest of which was together for 10 years and 389 gigs, and a total of over a 1,000 gigs between the three bands.

On all of the gigs, I take my 2 main basses, a 2011 Fender USA 60th Anniversary Precision Bass with a Seymour Duncan Basslines pickups, and a 1992 Fender MIJ “75” re-issue Jazz Bass with a Badass II bridge and Custom shop 60″s pickups.

The need to fill the bass chair was my inspiration for starting bass.

One of My current inspirations is Scott Devine of Scottsbasslessons, and also the overwhelming amount of Bass instruction and information on Youtube.

One of the toughest gigs was being one of the local bands as an opening act for a Allman Brothers Band & Little Feat show. Besides the waiting for several hours in 95 degree hot weather, we also had the misfortune to share the opening spotlight with another local band. The other local band was as we found out very arrogant and equipment snobs. The other band’s Drummer was in no way going to let our Drummer make any minor adjustments on his kit to make it easier for our Drummer. What was suppose to be a great showcase for us, turned out to be one of the worst gigs ever.

I am very fortunate to have the support of my wife Darlene in all aspects of my music, from buying, selling & trading equipment to going to almost every gig. I have enjoyed being part of the Bass community for almost 38 years, and look forward to many more!

Here’s Mikael doing this thing:

Would you like to be interviewed as a featured bass player? Submit your entry here.

This week we had a chance to catch up with Mikael.
