This is a bit of a follow-up to our “mudbucker” article<\/a>, as Patrick has a real-deal ’64 Epi Newport (original owner!) with a real-deal mudbucker in it.<\/p>\n

Patrick’s story:<\/p>\n

I purchased this Epiphone Newport back in 1964. Played it for about four years as is, but I wanted a EB3 so bad (that I couldn’t afford at the time) that I decided to do my best to make an EB out of the EPI.  Considering I was 17 when I decided to do this and had no idea what it might be worth later, I went for it. A woodworking friend and I took the original reddish finish off the body. We did not touch the original finish on the back of the neck. Hence the bass has since been know as “Ol’ Redneck”. I removed the original single Sidewinder pickup and bought two new pickups from Gibson in 1968. You can see that the neck pickup has Gibson stamped into the cover plate. That’s the way it arrived from Gibson to me. I of course added volume and tone pots for the new bridge pickup. As you can also see I put a Schaller Bridge on to replace that single bar non-adjustable Gibson and a new pick-guard. I have always been a fan of short scale basses and have probably owned at one time or another almost every version out there,  plus 34″s.  This is still one of my favorites. Now I mainly play a custom made short scale from Birdsong Bass, but I still like to find a suitable short scale that I can upgrade with the appropriate gear from you guys here at Best Bass Gear.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
