One: that nothing stacked up to the sweet spot on old Germanium-powered transistors. And two: that those same pedals were “more sensitive than a train car of nitro.”

Along with the added noise and signal loss, germanium transistors were incredibly temperamental. Battery power or even temperature could have a drastic effect; throwing the sound all out of whack.

TECH21 set out to capture that same vintage tone in a dependable modern pedal. One component at a time they built it from the floor up to consistently emulate that ideal germanium tone.

The result is the Bass Boost Fuzz. Not only does it thicken up your tone with a rumpled girth, but the boost function pumps up 21dB of studio-quiet operation.

And with all the controls you’re looking for in a pedal – Level, Tone, Drive, +Clean, and Boost – you’ll be able to find the perfectly balanced, layered sound.

Use the +Clean control to mix in just enough of your fundamental bass tone, whether than means adding just a little stubble to your sound, or giving it full-on mountain man beard treatment.

Their approach to the pedal goes back to the days Andrew Barta founded TECH 21.

“In the beginning I was building, as they say it, on the kitchen table,” Barta told TMNTV at NAMM ’12.

“I owned a repair business. I was repairing tube amplifiers, so I had a lot of inside knowledge of how they work. And I had really high-end clients in Manhattan – you know studio musicians and rock stars. And I always tinkered around with different pedals and sounds.”

“I decided to emulate these great amplifiers. And I build a prototype for myself first, because I was also a working musician and I went to studios and it was really frustrating sometimes . You spent too much time on getting a good sounds instead of playing.”

The Bass Boost Fuzz is part of a new collection from TECH21 that includes Boost Overdrive, Boost Distortion, and Boost Fuzz pedals, and a VT Bass 1000 Amplifier.

The Tech 21 Bass Boost Fuzz Pedal retails at $195, but order it today from Best Bass Gear for just $149.

TECH21 set out to capture that same vintage tone in a dependable modern pedal.
