Do 30-90 bass strings really work for slap?

For those of you out there who don’t think that a light 30-90 set of bass strings would work for slap, the video below proves otherwise!

But hang on, the video gets better than just demonstrating lighter strings. The video presenter even went so far as to demonstrate old strings first, then a new set afterward, using the exact same amp settings and same size strings.

To note: This is a video that’s close to 9 minutes long, and it does start with some talking – however – it’s worth watching all the way through not only to hear the 30-90 set, but also the differences in sound from an old set to new.

  1. I do love new strings for their chime and clarity. Not in the position to be changing them often, but when I do I always love the crispy articulate tone and rich harmonics.

  2. I always used x-lites. didn’t know there was any issue with this. R.S. 30-90… I keep them on the shelf always. I have 5 out of 10 strung with them. The others are 8 string, 6 string or have a really delicate inlaid fingerboard I have to protect with flats.

I practice lines on my upright, then pick one of these up and wow.

Try them. It’s like power steering for your bass.
