This week’s BotW comes from builder Dan Lenz, with a build where it was attempted to get as many features possible into a single instrument (within reason, of course).
Dan writes,
The Sonic Wave Bass was inspired from long conversations about bass building with a friend. I took a list of features that we had liked on other basses but hadn’t seemed to find them all on the same instrument, and tried to work a lot of them into this bass. This is what I came up with:
- 35 1/4” scale length Wide 5 string neck-thru construction with an asymmetrical neck profile and ebony fretboard Bartolini pickups, utilizing a jazz pickup at the neck and split coil Music Man at the bridge with a three position pickup switch Bartolini NTMB preamp with active/passive switch, and full spectrum boost/cut.
- Very low action setup
- All Hipshot hardware
- Screwless wood electronics bay and truss rod cover
- The neck is hardrock maple with 1/4” curly maple top over the body, and 1/8” walnut on top and bottom of headstock.
- The body wings are figured black walnut. It is sealed with acrylic lacquer.
- The wood comes from a mobile sawmill near my house, most of the hardware/electronics from BBG.
It plays wonderfully, it’s bassy and very snappy with beautiful trebles.
HEY, LOOK! A VIDEO! You guys are always asking for sound demos, and this BotW actually has one. Cool!
And now for some photos:

Well done, Dan!
