Faith No More "Epic" – possibly one of the easiest bass lines ever

E, E

E, E-E

That pretty much describes almost the entirety to Epic by Faith No More.

The tone heard here is really chunky, really loud and the strings are being slammed with a pick for just about every note.

Billy Gould, who has been the only bass player for Faith No More as far as is known, is the one who laid down this track.

As simple as the bass line is, it does fit the song, so it could be argued that Billy really complemented the drums here and totally stayed in the pocket. Bass lines don’t have to be complicated to be good.

Oh, and one other thing. In the original mix, the bass blares in a real nice way. It’s not buried in the mix and you hear it loud and proud.

  1. Uh I don’t know about anyone else who listened to the song but Otho k that there are more notes he is playing in Epicthan just riding the open E string. Especially in the solo section of the song.

  2. Sorry for the bad spelling on last post. Phone keyboard couldn’t keep up with how fast I was typing. And autocorrect. The bane of my existence.

  3. Oh .. wow

Faith no more COULD be freaking ‘Epic’ … They ain’t selling ‘virtuosity’ or clever musicianship, just one thundering GROOVE, and right now I’m digging this more than Jaco or Geddy* (must be on 8x repeat by now!).. There’s more than ONE way to communicate emotion with yer instrument – my other killer ‘Primitive’ bassline’s gotta be Pere Ubu’s final solution (hint: If you’se out there have trouble playing something that simple, try switching HANDS , lol)

It sure sounds like they had fun MAKING this, and the massive production (horns) sure help, but like.. Wow!

    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (*don’t get sore, I LIKE Rush!)
