Playing like John Paul Jones? Not easy. But at least this will give you a head start on it.
To note: If John sounds out-of-time, he’s not. Ramble On is a type of song where the bass player essentially has to “follow his own metronome in his head”, so to speak. There’s really not much synchronization between the instruments, so John pretty much had to forge his own timing that would work with the other instruments heard.
In true JPJ style, he made it work. As an isolated bass track, the lines he uses sound disconnected because when separated from the other instruments, they are. But believe me, the lines are are in-time, even though they don’t sound like it.

I was surprised by this. I never thought much of his playing but this was very good.
Simply awesome. Totally fits the song. It was awesome then and it is still awesome now!
Never thought much of his playing??
Hah yeah wait what?! You never thought much of his playing? Some people blow my mind…..
Out of time…. hardly… subtle timing differences are what give music warmth and emotion… machines cannot do this (add warmth and emotion) effectively. Awesome.
