The top 20 ’90s dance songs on bass (or maybe not?)

Yes, it’s another one of those internet top lists. But this one is cool because it involves the bass guitar.

To note up front: We didn’t make this list. Rather, the video creator did. So if there are songs you feel are missing or shouldn’t be here at all, feel free to comment and say so, but again, remember that we didn’t make this list. 🙂

What you can take from this song list is this, and it’s something you can take comfort in as a bass player:

Disco music never really died.

Many say that disco died in the ’70s. Not true. It was just reformulated to sound different, and you will hear in the video below that the music, recorded two decades after disco “died,” sounds a lot like disco. That’s because it is.

Dance music does follow a formula, and while the sound changes from decade to decade, when you break it down with a bass guitar, you’ll notice it’s the same disco thing that happened in the ’70s.

The disco beats and bass that got people on the floor in the ’70s is the same that got them on the floor in the ’90s and is still the same today.

Is it worth your time as a bass player to learn dance groove bass lines like the ones below? Absolutely.

  1. Proud to say that I’ve never heard ANY of those songs, and only three of the artists (Cher, Ace of Base, Madonna). But, nice playing.
