A common thread that anyone over the age of 30 says is, “they don’t make music like they used to”.
Oh, I beg to differ. Check this out:
That, if you can believe it, is a new song. Yes, really. The song is Treasure by Bruno Mars, and if you can believe it, the bass guitar is turned up in the song. Way up.
It is very, very rare to hear such a pronounced bass tone turned up that much in a modern mix, but there it is.
And wouldn’t you know it, it’s ranked at #5 of the BillBoard Hot 100 right now at the time of this writing. Again, yes, really.
So to any naysayer that ever said “bass is dead”, um… I don’t think so. 🙂

One song that sounds similar to the 80’s, compared to millions of others isn’t really a valid point.
Gotta agree with this. It would be more accurate if the point was being made about the video, not the bass.
Bass has never been dead. The mix has most bass too far down, as in non-existent. The worst is just about anything you hear on TV. I understand the dynamic range is limited, but then there’s no bottom, and it all sounds quite hollow. You’ll often not hear enough bass drum either. I started playing bass, (switched from guitar and I double on sax) because I want to hear AND feel bass. The lows hit different chakras than the rest of the instruments. If you don’t believe in chakras, tell me where you feel each instrument, which part of your body? The music should reach every bit of your physical being to touch the rest.
This particular tune doesn’t have that big wall of sound mush…. very nice to hear all instruments clearly.
