[Bass of the Week] ACF Custom Mary Louise 4

Another name for this build could be “Super Walnut”!

Builder Adam Falkner writes:

The Talkbass Winter Build-Off began in December and this year’s theme was to make a bass predominantly with WALNUT. When I think about walnut basses, the words I think of are “elegant” and “exotic”, so it seemed like I had to really step it up to meet the challenge. Plus, there’s the fact that I knew I was doing this contest with some really good competitors, so this was something where I’d need to pull out as many stops as possible.

When deciding on specs, the overall theme was attempting to use walnut wherever I could and to maximum effect. Making a neck through, “hippie sandwich” bass was always a goal, so this seemed like a perfect opportunity to do that.

The specs are as follows:

– Highly figured walnut facings
– Walnut/Mahogany core woods with maple accent layers, chambered
– Walnut back with maple/walnut tone block and control cover plate, magnet mounted
– Walnut/Mahogany neck through body with graphite reinforcement and dual action truss rod
– Bocote fingerboard with walnut sapwood binding, 26+ stainless steel frets, 32″ scale, 20″ radius, tilt back headstock, handmade walnut/mahogany truss cover
– Zero fret with walnut string retainer “nut”, 1.5″ width
– Matching walnut/mahogany pickup cover
– Walnut knobs, handmade
– Walnut tailpiece with gold string ferrules
– ABM gold roller bridge with walnut height spacer
– Walnut sapwood logo
– TruOil finish
Hipshot Ultralight Tuners, 3/8″ Y in gold
– Status Pickup
– Volume/Tone controls, passive
Gold StrapLocks

The end result was definitely the culmination of a lot of hard work and it was a fantastic learning experience. It was an absolute blast to compete with the people on Talkbass who have shown me how to do so much.

Well done!
