[Bass of the Week] Steve Arnett Custom Build

This week’s build is a custom job by Steve. Here is a bit about what he had to say:

This one is sold to a special customer…you’ll notice the custom inlay on the fretboard.

5 string, 34″ scale, 18.5 mm string spacing at the bridge per the customer. That’s all he requested…he left ever other aspect of the build to me.

Neck is a neck through 7 piece laminate. Center is Chechen flanked by two thin strips of rock Maple, Walnut, and the outer parts are quarter sawn rock Maple. The fretboard is a beautiful birdseye Maple.

Body is Alder outers with a Swamp Ash center core. The inlay at the neck joint is Wenge. There is a thin layer of Makore between the body and the bookmatched flamed Maple top. The headstock is capped with the same two woods as is the matching ramp. I dyed the top black to match the black in the neck inlay. The body is finished in a catalyzed urethane…highly polished top and satin back.

Electronics feature a Mike Pope Flexcore2 preamp and Aguilar DCB pickups. The tuners are Hipshot ultralite polished nickel. The bridge is Hipshot chrome plated aluminum. The nut is from Graphtech, and the strings are (owner supplied) Fodera ultralights.

This thing has tone for miles!!

So, what do you think of Steve’s new build? BTW – If you’re going to comment, whether it be positive or negative, please keep it constructive! We don’t approve of haters. [Comment below]

  1. Super nice work Steve! Great design and craftsmanship putting it all together. Just my preference here but the only thing I would have changed Is the knobs.
Outstanding bass and I would love to hear how it sounds.

  3. Nice job!! Not my style- but no reason to not appreciate such a beautifully executed instrument. I bet the sustain on this is huuuuuge.
Best bit for me? : Attention to detail of the ‘thumb groove’ for the rear electrical chamber: Sounds silly, but not when you are trying to access it, not needing to scarf the finish up or find some tape to pull it off.
    Well done.
