[Bass of the Week] AR 1404

The feature bass for this week comes all the way from Finland!

Builder of the bass, Alarik Repo, writes:

This is the first electric bass I have built. I never had a fretless bass and everyone I have tried were not so good as I wished. I am living on a small island in great archipelago in SW Finland and I wanted to have some material from our surroundings. The body is alder from the island nearby, the neck is maple and the fret board is rosewood. The knobs are made of juniper from our court. The saddle is made of elk bone which I found from another island nearby. The plates on the back side are made of teak leftovers from a boat builder. The microphone(s) + wiring is EMG-MM-TW. The only decoration on the fret board is made of an old piano key, the side markings are made of an expired credit card. I have played with this bass almost all kinds of music from blues, rock and jazz and I never had a better electric bass than this. My previous ones have been Fender Mustang, Rickenbacker, Gibson… This bass has the radius of an old Fender (ca. 7.25) and the length and feeling of the neck is of a Fender JB.

  1. What a great bass and amazing story. I’m a believer in applying the concept of terroir in luthiery, and woodwork, and everything for that matter. Using materials from the immediate environment adds meaning, and it’s better for our planet. Awesome job!-Patt Finn

  2. Fantastic bass! Very cool use of materials. Those knobs are the icing on the cake. Really liked reading your write-up on this build. Thanks, placeboe
