[Bass of the Week] Button AKG Bass

The feature bass this week is a fretless with a nice selection of woods and an upscale appearance.

Owner Ashley Gray writes:

Custom made in 1998 to my own specifications by the late Rod Button, luthier of Weston-super-Mare. The body of this superb six-string fretless bass is Walnut, faced with burr Elm and bound with abalone inlays. The neck is Maple with an Ebony fingerboard. The bass features EMG pickups and active electronics.

  1. Good job. My only comment is that I like the contoured smooth back better than the (avalone?) square, hard edge. Does not have the tapered or shaped “arm rest” like
a Fender to make it comfortable. Nice selection of woods though…

  2. After looking a the pictures closer, there appears to be a tapered arm rest/edge just above the bridge. My apologies if that is the case. Still, the avalone edging does nothing for me… Sorry

  3. Good job. However, as it often happens with smaller builders (and sometimes with big names), the body’s nice, the headstock looks fine but stylistically they don’t match well.
