  1. Big frickin’ deal!!! You can go to the store and pickup a bass that not only looks like that BUT probably will be built and sound better. Sorry, but that’s the way I feel.

    • Jeez! Nice attitude Gary. Didn’t your Mama ever teach you if you can’t say anything nice S.T.F up! I suppose you have something better to post. Nah, don’t bother, I really don’t care.

      • Um I have to agree with Gary! I have yet to see a really cool bass on BOM! They are all fender p bass or jazz basses.. whoopdy freakin do! that oir they are some some really wierd personal wet dream. Sadly, I can honestly say I have yet to see a really worthy bass on BOM. Really what is the big deal about this bass? What is so custom about it? The builder copied a stale old body style and threw on some hardware.. big whoop!

  2. That’s a beautiful bass Derek, don’t listen to Gary, He’s probably very young and immature. He’ll learn how to behave around adults when he grows up.

  3. Yes, you could pick up a jazz, that is built like that, or a Lakland. But you did it yourself, saved a bundle and had fun building it. Enjoy, it looks great.

  4. Nice work, Derek.I especially like the way the headstock is shaped and your choice of pickups. I’m not sure what’s up with Gary T and ol’ Notimpressed but, then again, does it really matter? That’s a sweet bass!

    • No it doesn’t matter, some people don’t dig Fender style basses, I dig classic looks and tone. I’ve owned an MTD 535 and thought it was an awesome bass and in the future I plan on doing a more modern design but for now the classic just works.

  5. Great lookin bass!Ill bet it sounds sweet 2. For all the complainers out there, the reason fender and fender type basses are so popular is because they are the undeniable industry standard for recorded tone.. Period. Any reputable studio has an assortment of fender basses for a reason, because they just work like nothing else.. period.

  6. When you know what you like and figure out it can’t be bought at (place name of guitar superstore here), then you put it together yourself. So what if this one is not what you would have done. It’s not your bass. Do you people really think that anything you don’t personally like is fair game for childish insults. There really should be a requisite IQ test to qualify for posting on sites like this.

    • Ya know Rob my complaint isn’t about his bass being a Fender, its that its ALWAYS some old fender or some weird curvy custom bass on these things as if only Fender’s are valid quality instruments or that a bass has to be custom made by someone with laquer… the finest tone woods.. flame tops..etc to be any good. In truth by the time you color the sound with the string choice, playing style, pickups, on board electronics, cables, preamp/amp, EQ and speaker choices an electric bass could be a 4×4 block of wood with a neck, bridge and pickups on it and it will sound just as good as the most expensive high end basses out there.. its all so superfluous.

      • Why would you feel the need to complain at all? It’s not your bass. I love it when a guy takes something he put a lot of work into, puts it out there for people to see and then gets a barrage of juvenile, closed minded remarks about how much it sucks. I said it up top and I’ll say it again. Show us the one you built. Show it or shut it.

        • Again, Rob, for me it isn’t about his bass its the fact that all of the BOM picks are always fenders or some weird custom…

But to reply to your off topic tangent….Closed minded? really???!!?? I have playing electric bass for over 25 years now and I will keep my own opinions on the subject, thank you.
I love it when an experienced musician tries to share their knowledge and help guide less experienced players and it is perceived as “Jeuvenile” or “Closed minded”… what we do bassists is a dieing art, they have software now that allows a producer to just make the bassline whatever they want it to be with no input from us… and here I wanna pass on my knowledge and help aspiring bassists and what do I get? this ignorant crap from people like you. Ok, you don’t want my guidance.. fine.. bye.

  7. Well, if you want a fender jazz or p bass that sounds like a fender jazz or p bass,
why not buy a real Fender? Why spend 3 or 4 times what a real one cost? Maybe spend the rest of the money you saved on lessons……..

  8. I don’t think this is the right place to express personal frustration like some people are doing here. I challenge mr. or mrs or whatever… “Notimpressed” and others who need to do that to at least use their own names. If you can’t do that then talk to your mother (or maybe a shrink) about what’s wrong with the world. I can also maybe help if you give me your name and address. I’ll bring you some balloons and ice cream. Or maybe candy floss and a lollipop? How does that sound?
