Many builders take inspiration from Fender design and then improve upon it to meet their needs, and that’s exactly what this week’s BotW is all about.
Builder Sven Are Ellingseter writes:
I wanted a 4-string fretted bass with a maple neck but did not fancy a Precision or Jazz bass, so I decided to build one myself. The body is solid alder (two-piece) with a bookmatched 4A flame maple top. The top is stained in two stages; first a coat of mahogany brown (which was sanded down) and then a coat of light yellow to achieve a 3D effect. The neck is a super-construction all maple fretted paddle-head from Warmoth (fantastic neck!). The contour of the headstock is my own design. Tuners are Hipshot HB6Y Ultralights and the bridge is an all brass Hipshot A-type. Pickups are Bartolini PJ setup (Neck: CPB P, Bridge: CBJS L-1 J) with passive electronics (Volume, Blend, Tone). The bass is clear coated with a two component polyurethan laquer. It sound fantastic, but I`m considering to install active electronics to get a more versatile tone spectrum. The sustain is “ever lasting” (actually better then my Pedulla Pentabuzz!), so I`m very happy with the result. Enjoy!

A fine build, indeed. Well done, Sven!

I love the work, I really like how you shaped the heel where the neck meets the body. Well done!
Thank you! It makes it a bit easier to reach all the way up the frets 🙂
That neck joint is inspiring
The bass is beautiful…would like to see a better, more attractive electronics cover installed…current cover looks less than professional…imho…”Doc”
Thank you! Yes, the electronic cover is not perfect. Personally I don’t care, but yes, it would probably be better with a better fit plastic cover or something.
Beautiful work! This is a true original! But I will join Doc in saying that the back plate isn’t, in my opinion, right. Humble black plastic would look better, I think. But it’s not my bass! And it sure is a splendid piece of craftsmanship.
anyone else thinking that it looks like it has
“Tan Lines”
Artful…congrats!
Tan Lines? Don’t see ’em. I’m sure the haters do.
The neck joint and heel are so awesome, in fact the entire bass is awesome great work!!!
Thank you all for a nice response! Glad you liked the design. This is my first serious build, and I hope to be able to build another one soon. Maybe a 5-string? 🙂
What a beautiful top, and the finish looks perfect. Great work on the heel too, that is cleverly done.
I will echo some others comments on the electronics cover. The rest of the bass is so stunningly executed, it seems a shame to not finish that cover to meet the execution of the rest of that beautiful bass.
Bottom line, though, it’s yours and all that matters is if you are happy. I’m betting you are VERY happy with that bass.
Post a video on it, I’m sure everyone wants to hear it:) I’m speechless, pure Genius!!! It’s Beautiful. Thanks
