[Bass of the Week] Fish Custom Guitars M-Factor 5

This week’s feature bass is a 5-string headless.

Builder Jeff Ziebart writes:

This is a neck through 5-string I built featuring a 5 piece center section of padauk, eastern maple, and wenge between walnut veneers.

The fingerboard is cocobolo bound with bloodwood and the 24 frets are medium Evo gold colored wire.

The body wings are ash cores with western flamed maple front and back with black veneer layers for the pinstripe effect.

The pickups and 2 band preamp are Bartolini, the tuning system and bridge are custom pieces from ETS in Germany with 19mm spacing, the aluminum locking headpiece is hand machined by me and the knobs are ebony.

The control cover is cut from the back layer of maple before it’s glued together so the grain is contiguous and it is held in place with neodymium magnets.

The input jack is mounted to a Strat style jackplate on the side of the bass.

The body design is my own with a long horn (in combination with no headstock weight) for perfect balance on a strap or while sitting.

The wider 19mm bridge spacing allows me to pop more comfortably with my wide fingers. The neck is quite shallow with a slightly flat back which is my preference.
