[Bass of the Week] Flying Monkey Instruments 60’s White

See the business listing for this bass builder here

The feature bass for this week has plenty of thump to it.

Builder Mark Bombard writes:

I call this bass “60’s White”.  I’ve always liked basses built in the 60’s.  Like many of those this bass’s body is poplar.  Because poplar is know for its lack of sustain, it produces a thump that other woods can’t match.  It’s perfect for recreating the 60’s sound.  It’s painted with a “dead flat” white.  This paint will not reflect light.  Add a pealoid white pick guard and it screams old style.   All my basses have the vinyl back pad.  The neck is from a Hagstrom bass built in, you guessed it, the 60’s, but has extensive rework.  New frets, rosewood fretboard, aged mother of pearl inlays, along with LEDs in the side fret markers.  The preamp and center pickup are Bartolini.  The neck pickup is Hofner and the bridge pickup is a generic single coil pickup that came out of an old Rogue B-100.  Strings are 100-45 flatwounds of course.  Although I was aiming for the 60’s sound with the different pickups and Bartolini preamp just about any sound is possible with this one.

  1. I’m really not to impressed with most of the basses featured ,but this one is probably one of the best thought out ones I’ve seen. I like the idea of poplar wood for the chunky thump. nice touch on the head.

  2. FANTASTIC!
Love those Hagstrom and Vox/Greco “toothpick” necks.
Love getting vintage sounds with versatility of a preamp system.

My own dream is to have a Gibson sidewinder at the neck, and a Rickenbacker horseshoe at the bridge, with passive preamp and EQ.

  3. Very interesting bass. Couple of questions. How is the little white thumb rest attached to the pickguard or the bass body? Is the back pad to stop buckle rash, I guess? Why 3 strap buttons? Thanks.
