This week’s bass guitar of the week started off with just a ’66 Hagstrom neck, and ended up being something much different – and even has fret marker LEDs.
Builder Mark Bombard writes:
This is a custom 30.75″ short scale bass. I started with a 1966 Hagstrom bass neck with their classic I-beam truss rod. I replaced the Rosewood fretboard, frets, inlays, I reshaped the peghead from a Fender style 4-L to a 2-L & 2-R configuration. I also put Blue LED’s behind the mother of pearl fret markers. This is a semi hollow body. The total weight is only 7.7 pounds. There is also a removable pad on the back. It has a Bartolini neck jazz pickup, a Hofner Icon pickup for that classic rock sound and a Rogue bridge pickup along with a Bartolini 3-band pre-amp.

At first glance, you really can’t tell this is a short scale bass. It is appointed with nice features and has a simple, elegant look to it. Well done, Mark!

“What does it sound like?” “well… everything”
Sorry it’s taken me so long to back to you. Yes, it does have quite a few usable sounds. To be honest, it’s not quite the sound I was looking for. It’s very clean and has tons of sustain, and a metal twang. I like the 60’s thump sound. I built an exact copy of this bass with poplar body. What a huge difference in the sound! I got the perfect 60’s sound.
What bridge does it use in order to get that tight string spacing?
Looks like four single-string bridges.
This bass is sick… I’m all about the LEDs.. And the pickup configuration is crazy..
Sorry it’s taken so long for me to get back to you. The bridge(s) are the standard single bass bridges. I did take a tiny bit off each bridge to get them a bit closer to each other.
Sorry it’s taken so long for me to get back to you. Thanks so much!
BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks so much!
well done, inlays on neck are awesome as well
The inlays are actually banjo inlays, but I like them just the same. I’ve been putting them in every bass I build now.
Outstanding!
Makes me think of a Wal
how in the world is this beast wired??? 0_o#
The pre-amp is a Bartolini 5.4, with some slight alterations. I’ll send you the wiring diagram if you’d like.
wow. wow.
you’re really on to something.
