[Bass of the Week] Graham Diesel 71

See Ian’s business listing here

This week’s BotW arrived in the featureme@bestbassgear.com inbox as just a description but with no title. The headstock says “Graham” (the last name of the person who sent it in,) and since the color was inspired by a Detroit diesel 71 Series, it seemed only appropriate to name the bass the Graham Diesel 71.

Ian writes:

Cut the body out of a piece of ash years ago, and it sat for quite a while before I figured out the right color to paint it. I was walking by a marine diesel mechanic shop and saw a Detroit diesel 71 series engine being worked on and thought it was the perfect color for this bass, after that the building took off… Since I had the engine color going on I decided to continue with a sort of hot rod feel, lots of chrome, racing stripes polished aluminum pickguard. Went with a mahogany/wenge laminate for the neck, strong and lighter than maple. Hipshot bridge and tuners, with detuner on the E. Basslines musicman style pickups and a Bartolini 5.2 preamp. So there it is, I couldn’t be happier with it, hopefully others will dig it as well.

lil bass back of head neck

lil bass full top

lil bass heel

The visual appointments on this bass were definitely done right, and the competition stripe totally fits the look.

(Additional note: While this has nothing to do with the bass itself, the fact the photos were taken against a plaid backdrop makes the bass look just that much cooler.)

Well done, Ian!

  1. Stringed instuments are always female! 58 years playing bass and I like my instruments stock. Recently I started to custom some old instruments. SO I looked at this and thought would I buy this if she sang? definately Yes!
