[Bass of the Week] Grainger Guitars Origin

See the business listing for this bass builder here

From small companies come great things, as this feature bass of the week proves.

Darren Grainger from Grainger Guitars writes:

Grainger Guitars is a small custom shop run by my brother (Gavin Grainger) and myself.  Having played guitars/basses for almost 20 years and loved all things guitar related we decided to use our skills as precision engineers and the CNC machinery in my engineering company to make some guitar bodies (Strat type) having good results with these we began to experiment on original designs using solid works and CADCAM.  Over the last 12 months we have produced a few 6 string guitars of varying designs and specifications and decided to try our hand at a bass.  Whilst producing the wooden items we have also manufactured our own bridges and just started manufacturing our own tuners.

Our first bass is now complete, known as “Origin” this build is a 24 fret, 4 string, dual humbucker layout, 3 piece ash body with walnut stringers and detail inlay, book matched rosewood top, zebrano slim profile neck with rosewood finger board featuring spalted beech custom 12th inlay.  Active Glockenklang 2 band EQ with pickup balance and volume controls, Sperzel locking tuners, adjustable nut and precision manufactured Grainger Guitars “Lock & Rock” bridge.

  1. What a beautiful bass! Great wood, great finish! If it sound even half as good as it looks it must be a real killer! Nice job with the bridge, too. What pickups are you using? In any case, very well done. Inspiring!

    • Hi Geoff, these are artec sound humbukers but as most of what we do is custom the design can be tweaked for any brand or type of pup

    • Hi, we are working on a couple of different models, there will also be 5 string and alternative pick up arrangements of each design as well as the ability to select the woods and finishes used to suit individual tastes

  2. 2 thumbs up! I love that you are redefining things in an unlimited way, since your skill set and machinery are mastered. Curious: how much does it weigh? excellent work!

  3. Very nice except the pickup routs. If those were done on a CNC there’s a problem. As it’s a prototype I am sure it will be corrected before the next run. What happened?

    • It’s more of an optical illusion and the way the sun is reflecting off the copper shielding, but as with any prototype we have tweaked the 3D model and made a few fine adjustments and all is sweet now.

  4. Very well done job for a prototype, except (as Danny said) for the pickups routing job (pickups, not the electronic) Normally you shouldn’t see any space between the body and the pickups, especially if the body was routed for those specific pickups.
A++ for the ‘Grainger’ bridge, you should ‘trademark’ it and start to sale it ‘online’ (through BG…)
