This week’s bass guitar of the week comes from a builder out of Dodge City, Kansas.
Builder Steve Genereux from Lower Groove Guitars writes:
The bass is my “HOOK” model. Named for the hook feature below the bridge. It’s purely cosmetic and I have been doing this basic hook design feature since 1992. Color on the 5 string Is Bloodvein. Swamp Ash Body, maple/maple neck, Grover tuners, Schaller bridge and strap locks. Active EMG’s with 3 band EQ. They are Built in Dodge City, Kansas by me, by hand, one at a time. I currently build 4 & 5 string, 34″ scale basses. I have four of my own bass models, Hook, Tyranis, Paragon, and Axiom and have also modified J and P bass designs to my own specs, basically slightly smaller and lighter bodies. J or P necks are available on any body style. There are also two 6 string guitar designs I offer. The Slyder and Badazz. All available for custom order with many options on each model. Choice of woods, necks, etc. the rundown of what I offer is on my website.

I like it … except for the headstock logo. But that’s just my taste. beautiful instrument though!
I think a flathead screw for the back cover would be better, and the battery box should be recessed and set flush to the body. Nice looking guitar!
I tried flathead screws but the consensus was they looked cheap. The oval head looks really good in person.
I second the comment about the battery cover.
Battery box cover may go to wood in the future. It does not get in the way and can’t be felt because of its placement. No need to recess it. But thanks for the comment.
Knobs are too spread out,will get in the way..
I have plenty of players with this same standard knob configuration and no complaints thus far. They are actually nicely spaced.
I’ve actually had many positive comments and owners of this bass love the knob spacing. No need to crowd the knobs. A long standing issue on many basses I’ve played. The battery box is meant to be installed over the top and not be recessed.
I may go to a wood battery box cover in the future. The plastic box looks good and does not impede playing in any way. I chose oval screws because flat head screws just looked cheap. These are all items that were tested along the way and got the approval of many bass players.
