[Bass of the Week] Sig Mar Juglans

See the business listing for this bass builder here

Everyone needs some Juglans in their life. You’ll understand what that means after reading this build story.

Michel Simard from Atelier Sig Mar writes:

This is the first official “Sig Mar” bass. I’m a new luthier starting a business. I come from a background of music studies and later, woodworking studies. And then I mixed both of my passions to build instruments. I’m a bass player so obviously, I wanted to build basses! This bass is a special order for my girlfriend’s cousin, who is an active musician in Montreal, Canada. He wanted a 5 strings bass but could not find one he liked enough so he ordered me a custom one. At that time i already had some shapes i wanted to create and fortunately, he chose one of them. The Juglans,  which means Walnut tree in latin. All my models have Latin tree names. On that bass, the body is made of ash whit a birch top. The neck is made of maple and white oak. And the fretboard is made of ebony, white oak and padauk. The electronic is an active PJ5 EMJ pickups and Hipshot hardware. And it sounds great!!

    • Yes his name is Gabriel Lamarre. He’s playing with a funk band tomorrow(16 july) at Le Bleury bar at 22h00

  1. That is a beautiful bass! I like how you maintained the natural beauty of the wood while combining different woods to add to the artistic texture. I’d love to hear what is sounds like!

  2. Beautiful build! I love the neck woods and the design looks comfortable, PJ pups, a great choice! Congrats on a well crafted instrument!
I wish BBG had sound clips!

    • We can only feature sound clips when the builder provides us with them. The builder did not provide any sound clips.

  3. Nice! Did you have any trouble with the string “break” at the bridge saddle with that bridge? I tried that transtone and had some buzzing issues.

    • Thanks! It’s my first time using this type of bridge and I had no issue. The only thing that bothers me is that there’s no side adjustments. But in the end it worked great!

  4. This may very well be the prettiest basses that I’ve seen. Exquisite workmanship! If you build them all like this I’m sure your business will do well. Good luck and God Bless

  5. Ummmm……???????……. So it’s name is “Wallnut Tree” and yet there was NONE in the build ?

    • In fact there is walnut. The thin layer of veneer between the top wood and the body is walnut. But I’m not planning on building every Juglans in walnut, every Cerasus in cherry wood etc.. It’s just a name and I think it sounded good for model name. You get my point? For me it’s like saying ”you have a Jazz Bass and you don’t play jazz?. Voilà.

  6. That’s a beautiful bass. You have a great artistic eye, and your woodworking skills are top notch!
Are you thinking of branching out into electric guitars as well?

  7. Obviously a true artisan – beautiful work and with those EMG,s I,m sure it sounds as good as it looks. I recently purchased a ZON Sonus V and thought that would be my last instrument, but this one has certainly wet my appetite!!
