This week’s bass guitar of the week is another superexotic build by Geo Kitta.
Geo writes:
This bass is called the Supernova. I designed it after my USA ’93 Fender American Standard 22 fret Jazz bass. (pic of both also included below ) The 22 fret all maple set-back headstock neck with inset rotary wheel truss-rod adjuster was made to my specs by Dan Ransom (SF/CA) danransomguitars@yahoo.com
I created the scallop in the headstock post build, which was pre-planned. I also cut the hybrid tusk/brass nut. Strings are medium gauge GHS Progressives. The body is red alder and I did the cutting/routing and shaping, pre-finishing including the ergonomic forearm scallop, rear body bevel and the rear integrated cavity cover Strat-jack. The pickguard was cut from 2-ply creme pearl. Pickups are Delano ovals, bought from BestBassGear, powered by an Audere JZ3 9v preamp. The bridge is a Schaller 3D and the cover is a Fender ’51 P style. The beautiful metallic custom colour/all finishing was done by Pat Wilkins (Van Nuys/CA) pat@wilkinsguitars.com
The bass weighs in at a comfortable 8.6lbs and balances well. The sound is huge with rich harmonic depth and presence. The neck was Plek’d post finishing and the feel is fast and creamy – “melts in your hand”.
I have plans for a limited edition of it if I can make that happen. Everything starts with a dream.
Well done, Geo!

Sweet bass!
Absolutely stunning and imaginative – much as your take on the Fender Performer style. Thanks for these!
Wow, that is one sexy hot rod of a bass. Very sleek and aggressive body work and brilliant finish. Bet it sounds awesome.
Oh wow!
This bass is absolutely stunning!! The body is beautiful, I love the forearm scallop..and the jack/back plate design is revolutionary!! (at least I’ve never seen one like that). Well done!!!
Awesome piece of work ditto on the jack plate design that is a great idea, hopefully others will pick up on your great idea!!!
I watched the build threads on TalkBass on these…. very nice!
Great job.
But what are those tuning gears. They look almost exactly like my ’99 Fender Jazz. I love them. I call them molded clovers. Nowadays Fenders uses those hideous standard whatever tuners. They look gruesome. The molded clovers are smaller and they can go 5-across the top, baby!
The tuners are very well designed/made MIK tuners – not sure the brand, based on the sculpted Schaller Deluxe tuners.
Thank you so much for replying. I will definitely use them in the future.
I found them for a fair price on ebay – but later bought a set that looked the same but they were made in China and much cruder.
Very tasty design! I’m truly impressed!
Too freakin’ cool! Great job!
Love it! Really reminds me of my favorite 4er – http://stuartclayton.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/kubicki.png
I’m a big Kubicki fan from the early 90’s (had 3, built a T-bird/Factor hybrid that I still have)
Nice going! What kinda nut is that
it’s a tusk/brass hybrid which adds clarity (brass) and yet maintains warmth (tusk)
Sweet design ,love the head stock all around sweet piece!
Absolute “Trick”
Well done!..the Concept, the Color, the Work!!..”Beyond Criticism”..Thank You Brother
i want mine in red, please.
I love the look of this.. especially the forearm scallop. I also like how you left that part of it natural wood and the clean line of paint on the edge. Pat did a great job with this. He recently painted one of my basses too.
Pat and Marty Bell are my go to finishers both for Gildaxe and my own projects.

STUNNING!!
