[Bass of the Week] The Vacillant Gambit

See Jeirn’s business listing here

This BotW that arrived to featureme@bestbassgear.com is being featured this week for one reason: It has a cool name.

Last week, I said that it’s helpful if you builders/modders out there actually name your basses when you submit them, and Jeirn’s bass without a doubt had the best name.

Jeirn writes:

I would like to submit my first truly custom bass, The Vacillant Gambit.
At this point, calling it custom is an understatement, because the only thing original about this bass is the neck and body wood and the bridge.
The body, neck, and bridge come from a Squier Affinity-series p-bass I picked up from a friend for $50 gas money, and that is where it began.
I promptly removed everything from the bass (including the finish on both the neck and the body and the “Squier” emblem, as it was decidedly not really a Squier anymore. I then proceeded to finish my bass with the help of my uncle (he painted show cars professionally, so I had almost free access to many kinda of high-quality automotive paints) and my father.  We painted the base coat metallic silver and after waiting for it to dry, applied the transparent ultramarine blue on the body which we textured to perfection. We then did the edges in cobalt blue to bring the whole scheme to life.
I then tore the frets out and filled the empty gaps with black automotive bonding epoxy and then had the fretboard leveled. I replaced the electronics with a prebuilt kit from Di Marzio and the tuners with nice and sturdy tuners (the name of which doesn’t come to mind).  A set of GHS Bass Boomer round-wounds were then set into place and finally I had this beauty.

Jeirn’s bass is “Squier done right”, no question about that. Good job!

  1. awh man, you guys went by the name on my e-mail, which is spelled incorrectly for a reason (as I have accounts on top of accounts all for different reasons and my name is taken by me already); Jerin is how it’s spelled.
Definitely thank you for the feature, I look forward to the cool stuff of the future. 🙂
