[Bass of the Week] TONA The Log

See the business listing for this bass builder here

This feature bass is a minimalist build where just one piece of wood makes up the entire body and neck.

(Video is after the photos so you can hear a demo!)

Builder Steve Jackson writes:

I had a fascination to put knobs on the side. It is one piece of wood, Body, Neck, Head Sapele with a Wenge fretboard. Wilkinson Music Man style pickup and Tone monster active preamp. Tapewound D’Addario strings. I love how it sounds. Deep Warm mellow tone. This is my first of many builds to come. This was partly to perfect techniques before a more serious style build I am starting soon. I am naming my builds after my late wife “TONA” in her honor. I am getting a branding Iron made to put name on it but I haven’t got it yet.

  1. I´ve seen many georgeus basses in this forum, this is one is the worst one, only because you made a few mistakes, first the good, i think the job you made with the one piece body/neck is great, now the bad, dot markers are terrible and the last one is not in line with the others, this configuration don´t allow playing in the lap, low quality components , if you put all that effort in making an instrument it deserves bether quality pickups etc. overall looks too simple try to put your name on the headstock or something, this will give a more professional look, the “fretboard” looks a liitlle rough.
Don´t get me wrong if this is your first project you did a great job, only this small but important details are not right, remember “attention to detail”
I made some of this mistakes, that´s why i know.
I will soon submit one of my basses, i hope it´s posted, and maybe learn something from someone.

    Good luck to all.

    • Yes I made a few mistakes. The Inlays were a new process. Metal dust with epoxy. Doing something different on the next one. I used cheaper parts because this was basically a prototype to get techniques down. I didn’t want to make on a better build. I have added a piece on the bottom for lap play. I have a branding iron now for the name . I like that look. All in all the bass came out good. For my fist one. I am starting the real build next week. All top of the line components. Schaller hardware, Nordstrand pickups and electronics. Wait til you see that one. I won’t make the same mistakes.

  2. For a first time starting out project, think that thing sounds cool! I need to do a build! All these cool ideas!! I bet your next one will be ridiculous, bro. Keep learning, and thanks for sharing, it inspires others to start building their own design!

    • My ideas for the next are unique. It will stand out. Doing some things hardly anyone is doing. Best thing I can say about building a bass is; jigs, jigs, jigs. Use them for everything, it’s worth the time building good jigs.
