[Bass of the Week] Virtuoso Klirahof Special

(Apologies that there is not a photo showing the full instrument, the builder did not include one in his photo set, unfortunately.)

The feature build this week started with a Hofner neck and went from there.

Builder Dan writes:

I started with an older Hofner neck, circa 1970. The fingerboard had been removed and the truss rod wasn’t working. I made a new rosewood fingerboard and installed a double acting truss rod. The body was a new old stock Klira violin bass body (made in Germany in the 1960’s) which had never been drilled or routed. The body was constructed in much the same way as any vintage Hofner with laminated sides and back – maple veneers, and laminated top – spruce bookmatch. The neck is a two piece maple construction with a tiger pearloid head overlay. I cut the neck pocket to fit the Hofner neck, bound the body (top) with tiger pearloid, replaced the OE back binding with black, rebound the sound holes with black, and finished the neck and body with nitro lacquer colors, and Fullerplast topcoats, the all black neck inspired by early Hofner 2 tone schemes. The pickups are Kent Armstrong jazz mini humbuckers, and the controls are volume, tone, and 3 way toggle. The result is a one of a kind hybrid which outperforms all of the genuine Hofners in my collection. Superb sustain and tone with the Hofner Cavern pickup positions. My former favorite violin bass was the Hofner 5000/1 Deluxe Beatle Bass which I have sold since finishing this one.

  1. Beautiful! I have a Hofner 500/1 and a Club. Just finished a new bass with a ’68 Harmony Rocket body and a Danelectro DC Bass neck. Double Cutaway hollow body and 34 inch neck. It may be my best bass ever. I’ve been playing since ’66.
