[Bass of the week] Carvin B-40

This week’s bass of the week is a very clean Carvin.

(Note: The owner of this bass did not state the year the bass was manufactured.)

Owner Glenn Bloom writes:

This Surf Green Carvin B-40 with matching color headstock and abalone logo was made from alder with a maple neck and special maple fretboard with diamond shaped abalone inlays. Standard passive electronics, but the knobs are the old style inline knob layout with abalone inserts. High mass bridge and my name was engraved on the truss rod cover.

Well done!

  1. B40’s are the Carvin bass kit model. Under special request it can be made and assembled in-factory. The series was discontinued and replaced with the BK40 kits in (I believe) 2015. Considering it has the smaller size truss cover and a contoured neck heel I would say this is a later model made between 2011-2015. Loves me some Kiesel/Carvins!

  2. The bass was made in late 2013. It was offered at the time as a regular factory model, the only thing that required a “special request” (other than the custom specifications) was the inline arrangement of the knobs. Older models had them lined up but by 2013, they were making them in a semicircle, which wasn’t as aesthetically pleasing to my sensibilities. Their only stipulation was that once done, I couldn’t return it. I don’t know why anyone would custom order a beautiful instrument, then return it, so I was all in. I was extremely amazed that you could get a custom ordered, American made, one of a kind Carvin for less than many off the shelf standard Fender models.

  3. Great piece of workmanship.
I once was set to order a Carvin bass but sudden financial issues stopped me.
Mine was to be Seafoam Green like this one but with 5 strings in EADGC.
I’ve been familiar with Carvin for decades, have a nice Carvin bass amp and hope to get my custom Carvin bass someday.

  4. I put a set of those abalone capped knobs on a telecaster that I built. within a week, one of the abalone inserts fell off never to be seen again. there is no mark where the adhesive was used. caveat emptor when purchasing these knobs, the chrome is too slick to hold the insert for long.
