The feature bass this week is described as a “Super Jazz”.

Builder Ian Ross writes:

I think Fender got it right with the shape of the Jazz Bass, so I decided to build a Fender inspired super Jazz.

When I first heard Nordstrand Big Singles I was so impressed I had to design my build around those. The body comprises a 1″ thick flame/burl maple over a 1″ thick mahogany rear. The body has a slight curve over its width for comfort (think Warwick!). Neck is solid rosewood, with a macassar ebony board. I cut the edges off the macassar before cutting fret slots so that I can use as a seamless binding to hide the fret tangs. MOP dot inlays are offset between the B and E strings. I chose a zero radius fingerboard as I had this on a previous custom bass I owned, and find it very comfortable.

After talking to BBG, I discovered Noll preamps. And what an awesome discovery! I opted for the 3PM three band parametric mid circuit. For the first time ever, the pan pot does a true blend between both pickups. Never had that before. Another thing I really love is that when the EQ is set flat there is no difference in volume or tone between active and passive mode. The frequencies suit the Nordstands so well. So many preamps have an unusable dB boost that sends the amp into clipping! The Noll has very useable frequencies even when heavily boosted.

Well done!
