[Bass of the Week] Larocque Tele bass 2017

Good things come to those who wait. This bass was inspired by a piece of spalted maple stored for 10 years before being put to use to build the right bass.

Owner Tom LeClair writes:

This bass was conceived when Denis told me that he’d had a beautiful piece of spalted maple for 10 years waiting for the right project and how he’d always wanted to build a tele bass. The bass has a partially chambered ash body with a book matched spalted maple top and matching headstock, a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. It is passive, has a 35 inch scale, a babicz full contact bridge, Delano pickups, humbucker at the bridge, single coil at the neck, two volume & one tone knob and light weight vintage tuners, strung with Thomastik Infeld jazz bass strings. It weighs about 9 pounds, is very well balanced, has an incredible array of tones and sits very well in the genres of music I play, country, blues, contemporary Christian and originals. The satin finish is hand rubbed. Overall an incredible instrument, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to own and enjoy it.

Well done!

  2. Hi Tom, Beautiful Bass – the chambering is great and I assume creates tone and keeps weight down? You do not show a photo of the rear and I was wondering what access panel you have for the electronics ?

  3. The chambering was put in place to help keep weight down but also to create some acoustics within the body. A bit of a leap of faith as we weren’t quite sure how it would sound but leap paid off in spades. An incredible array of tones and sustain. The 4 bolt neck connection is enhanced with the addition of two custom fitted wooden pegs inside the neck joint to achieve almost a “neck thru”. Never thought to show the back, should have. Instead of cutting one large opening to access all pots at once Denis opted for three 1 3/4″ diameter circular openings, one directly behind each pot to allow access and to minimize any further loss of body mass. It’s a great bass, will likely relegate my other 3 to long term storage. Denis is a great builder, it was a pleasure to work with him through out the process. Check out his other builds.
