This was possibly going to be the most awesomest bass video ever. The bass player is seen with cool red striped shirt and snazzy rainbow strap… until Barbara walks in and ruins everything.
No, Barbara!

“Damn, Maaaaaaaaa!” Too funny! It’s good practice for you when you enter the studio recording world & at times must do multiple takes, that all must sound as fresh as the first one. You will end up thanking your dear Mom for those interruptions of your earlier days.
My comment is not meant to be rude but I would love to see this guy play without a pick. Fingers no thumb unless doing slapping and popping. Using a pick for special effects only…maybe check out some great bass player videos and he would see what I mean.
Like Chris Squire, Noel Redding, Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones on several songs? Oh wait..they are great bass players and use a pick. My least favorite thing about bass blogs is people judging others on how they play (finger vs pick vs slap). Just let people play how they want to play and you play how you want to play. I use all 3 methods.
Me too. Fingers, pick, slap. In that order. Playing 48 years I tailor my style to the song being played. Whole Lotta Love wouldn’t be the same w/o Jonesy’s plectrum clicks, I assure you.
I’ve never played with a pick but Ronnie Lane did. It’s the sound you make, not how you make it.
Noel Redding ???
Jimmi Hendrix
Not to mention the fact that the great Carol Kaye herself said that 99% of the stuff she and other great studio bass players used was a pick… She played on how many hits?
Testify Michael!
Yup. Bass players, such as Paul McCartney, Dave Hope, Mel Schacher and Chris Squier that play with a pick really suck.
I’m guessing that you’re new to bass after reading your post. Perhaps when you get a bit more experience playing you will learn how to use a pick, and how several talented bass players (mentioned by others here) have used it. Good luck!
Never could play with a pick just cant hold on to one.
Try a V-Pick.
Carolyn, you need to look up the most recorded bass player in history, Carol Kaye. Not once has she played without a pick and she is the GREATEST bass player.

Well at least she didn’t walk in on him while he was ,huh…. You know.
Respectfully I would not have posted this and simply re-shot the video. Nice bass work however.
Yeah… But it won’t be your mom… 9 times outta 10 it’ll be the drummer. Play any way that feels natural and comfy to you. I like playing with a pick. I found it quite challenging at first… Getting all the sounds right… But it was well worth the effort. Now I can do things and get sounds and effects that my finger plunking friends just can’t match!
Major props for mentioning Mel Schacher! I’ve been playing for over 40 years (with a pick BTW) and Mel was guy who made me want to grab a J bass and growl. I still listen to old Grand Funk for inspiration.
He’s rather rude to his momma, who probably paid for that Aerodyne. Whose finish he’s carving up with that pick. Another shout for Mel, a less frequently mentioned old school player who drove some serious groove.
Dig Bobby Vega… pick meister
Bobby Vega, the effin’ funky master!
I don’t concern myself with judging how others play; pick or fingers, bow, whatever! The bottom line is the bottom line; doesn’t matter how you get there! I remember jazz players turning their noses up at bass guitars period! They considered them guitars, not basses & their players weren’t bass players, but wannabees. Also, I’ve gotten pressures to play bass with a pick in the past! Choose your own route; play with your thumb around the neck, if that works for you, even (slows me down, but after 40+ years of playing/working, I’m not changing what works for me).
I like Barbara. She’s polite.
Ive always played with my fingers. Find it hard to play with a pick. Takes practice to be proficient player with a pick. Not as easy as it looks!! Always loved Dave Hopes sound, Thx to whoever mentioned him.
Did Jaco play with a pick? I’ve never seen Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Mark King, John Patittuci, Stanley Clarke or Larry Graham play with a pick but I’m sure they could.
it’s mom…she can do anything she wants..hug her and start again
I think the “bassist”ruined the video way before mom opened the door. Take a few more lessons and practice a lot more before attempting another video. Sometimes bad is bad.
The guy ruined his video. Pick or fingers both require technique.
Play with whatever suits you and the music your playing. I’ve been playing for over 50 years and I’m still learning. Don’t be distracted by negative comments, bass is part of your DNA, keep playing.
