What does a Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5 sound like?

We recently posted the article What upgrade options are available for a Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 bass?, and a question that a few of you asked is whether or not the same upgrade options are available for the 5-string model, the Ray5.

Answer: Yes. And in fact, it has more upgrade options than the 4-string model does. Why? The dimensions of the 5-string S.U.B. Ray5 pickup are as such that we have several options for upgrades. Contact us and ask about it.

Recently, YouTube user vicglez posted a video of himself playing a Ray5 model so you can hear what a stock (or at least appears to be stock) Ray5 actually sounds like.

On its own, the Ray5 isn’t bad at all, but when you’re ready to add in some real character to the sound, we’ve got the parts and accessories you need to make your Ray5 a real force to be reckoned with.

Note: The video below is short, but it does give you a basic idea of what a Ray5 sounds like. Your sound will obviously be different based on the way you play.

  1. I have a 4 and a 5 string SUB. The 4 definitely has a MM vibe and I do use both live at times. I have installed a Bartolini pu with a 3 way switch in the 5 string and it sounds great. My biggest issue w the 5 string is the narrow string spacing, but for what they cost, ya can’t beat em.
