Deep Purple "Highway Star" Isolated Bass Track

Probably the most surprising thing about Highway Star by Deep Purple is the lack of lower notes on the bass.

Roger Glover stuck to the higher notes when playing this track, and it’s a good thing he did because on the original studio release the bass cuts right through and is heard loud and proud.

Another thing about this track is that its earthy feel is the fact the song was recorded as a band in studio. Yes, it’s true there was some overlaid instrumentation and vocals recorded later, but the foundation of the song was recorded as a band, and what a sound it was (and still is).

Roger did use his Rickenbacker 4001 on the Machine Head album – however it’s unknown if the 4001 was specifically used on Highway Star.

Note that although Roger did modify his 4001 quite extensively, we have parts you can use for your Rick that won’t require you to cut any new holes in your pick guard. 🙂

  1. No need to isolate that track, it was loud enough. Lol. Glover was a monster and doesn’t nearly get the credit he deserves.

  2. He galloped till 16 seconds. Didn’t hear any after that. I think his hand would’ve been cramped to the max if he would’ve done the whole song like that. A great bass player. And One of my favorite bands.

  3. I disagree. I don’t believe he is overlooked. He’s a legend..for good reason. He was the driving force in THE original hard rock band. Bassists in general usually don’t get the credit they deserve. In comparison to other bassists, Glover’s skills are pretty well known.
