Stripped, Sanded, and Stained

The things people do to poor defenseless bass guitars.

This Fender Squier that Mr. Schneebly – although probably not that Mr. Schneebly – found for $60 in a pawn shop probably looked great with the blue paint job. But then someone tried to create an aged look with a little sandpaper. Then apparently when that wasn’t enough they decided the problem was the lack of red and green paint.

It’s certainly a unique look, and maybe if you’re in a DIY punk band you could make it work, but Mr. Schneebly had other plans.

After stripping the paint, sanding it down, and staining it, he found a nice looking bass underneath. He painted the pickguard, and picked up a new bridge cover and some knobs to complete the look.

The transformation is quite impressive.

  1. The bass looks great. I am definitely into purchasing worn basses, and giving them new life. I was wondering if somebody could post video, or explain what tools- grade of sand paper – what stain was used. I have a similar project on hold. Just need a little more direction. Thanks

  4. Looking good. Did the same thing with an old ARIA bass. Came to me in pieces. Had a natural finish that was beat up. Neck was in good shape. Replaced bridge, tuning keys, pickup, and electronics. Made pick guard out 1/4″ plywood, thumb rest and truss rod cover out of teak. It still has battle scares they’re polished. Playing well, sounds great. It’s a work in progress. Gotta make it your own!!!
