New for 2014 from Fender comes the Proto Precision Bass. As said in the video below, the “Pro” series has been renamed to “Proto” because it always meant “Prototype” and not “Professional.”
It is typical that Fender will purposely stray away from tradition and try out new and different things with Proto series instruments, and the Proto Precision is definitely different.
What do you think of it? Cool or dud?

Sounds cool though the video really didn’t put it through its paces; would like to hear it a/b’d against a trad pbass and a cabronita.
Did something similar a couple years ago.

Nice Bass but NOT for a MSRP of $4300 !!!
I agree nice bass but not worth the money when you see other Fenders that are certainly high quality bass guitars in their stable that are a lot less and will give you more!!!
Try new things like putting the thumb anchor up top so it can be a thumb rest… now that would be innovative. These instruments are over priced.
You mentioned routing out. The body to “find the right sound”. Another simple innovation would have been a sliding platform pick up and let us decide where our spot should/could be at any time.
Like the Gibson “Grabber”?
I’m a lifelong fan of Fender’s Tele single coil p basses. Love the larger neck on my ’68.
I have to agree that these are way overpriced!
Not impressed, seems more like the same old , same old.
Well I guess it comes down to price custom shops are nice but really not affordable to many. Looks like a souped up Cabronita.
With a $3,400 street price, is it $2,800 better than a Cabronita?
I always thought of Fender as “The Peoples Bass” after 60 years of playing them but, oh you guys are so spinning your wheels when you come up with models like this Proto and ask $3.400 $US. Insane!
You gotta read Hans Christian Anderson. We all did, and that’s why you can’t sell these Proto Basses! You got the best easiest jobs in the world guys. I suggest your employer re negotiate your contracts and you all do a 3 month language course while working on a Chinese ‘Coal face’! That will give you some perspective. It’s no good having price gradients when your quality is just like my own hobby at home quality. In short. Stop being stupid and get your feet back on the ground. If not we are going to see oh so many more White Elephant products from my beloved Fender! ps. Bought my first Fender in 1958 and recorded with it!
