PRS SE Kingfisher Bass

New from PRS is the SE Kingfisher. This bass guitar has 2 dual-coil pickups, and a video is below so you can hear what it sounds like.

Do you think this bass sounds any good, or would there be things you would upgrade immediately after getting it? We’re interested to hear your opinion on PRS’s latest offering.

Watch the video below and let us know what you think.

  1. Í like the sounds but I would like to have more Growl on the Bridge Pick Up.In other words I think it needs a Bartolini Bridge Pick up. I might me to old and set in my way to give a valued opinion.

  3. Sounds good….. but, being a 5 string player, I would be interested if there were a 5, depending on the price of course.

  5. SE-line PRS instruments are imports, and generally under the $1000 in price. I don’t expect these to be much different.

  6. I’d like to see one w/o the high gloss finish…..Oil satin finishes on basses REALLY make it more comfy to play…….A wood combo of mahoghany, swamp ash, & rosewood.

    • I have had the Kingfisher since they came out, and I would have to agree. The bridge will only allow you to string-thru on the E and A. Tone-wise and A\B’d against a passive P-bass there is no comparision. The PRS has tones of growl, but no ass. That was really apparent on a recent blues\classic rock gig. Played the PRS 1st set, the Fender P the 2nd…and 3rd. All of the pots (vol, tone) are useless beyond the 1st 10%. The pickups are hum cancelling, but not really humbuckers.

      • I bought a Kingfisher bass and mine has the facility to string through the body on all 4 strings, I have several Fenders and fancied a change, a pretty good bass but for an annoying hum which I cannot get rid of, all the metal parts including the bridge are well connected to the negative side of the output jack so should be going to earth OK but I cannot get rid of it.

It is OK at rehearsal volume but cranked up live it is so bad I have given up on playing at it gigs which is a pity as it plays very well and I really liked the sound, I have tried different amps but with no improvement.

  7. Like all of PRS’s attempts at doing something other than high-dollar wall hangings, this falls short. They just don’t have a good handle on good bass tone. Add to that the downgraded hardware and electronics and all you have left is somebody who bought it for the logo.

    • I have to respectfully disagree with you. I have other high end basses that use the same Hipshot tuners and bridge. This is one of 2 non-active basses in my studio, and it hangs in there with active EMGs and active Bartolini’s as well.
