This week’s feature bass is a purple transparent 5-string beast.

This is first bass project from Latvian luthier’s Andrew Schultz custom workshop Brutal Guitars – Brutal Egregore 5.
This instrument’s design and specification was made in collaboration with Latvian avant-garde band Theatrum bass player.
Here is short description about this beautiful instrument:
The body of this five string instrument is made from two piece swamp ash with quilted maple top colored in purple transparent paint. Neck has bolt-on construction with four independently recessed screws and is made from one piece wenge. Flamed maple fingerboard with 24 extra jumbo frets makes perfect contrast with top and the neck. Two-color headstock matches both neck and top and is looks like devils horn. Neck sits tight in neck pocket that provides best possible connection between neck and body.
This bass is equipped with Gotoh GB707 tuners and J510SJ-5 bridge colored in black for perfect tuning and intonation. Graphtech TUSQ nut also contributing to the tuning performance, boost instrument tone and couples the strings vibration to the neck to bring out the hidden harmonics and richness in every note. Truss rod adjustment is placed after 24th fret with no covers, so it requires no special tools to get to truss rod and helps tune it quickly. It’s equipped with all-Delano electronics.
Pickups are J+MM configuration with additional three-way switch for bridge pickup that allows you to switch between serial, single coil or parallel modes. It has 4 controls for active/passive 2-band preamp Delano Sonor 2 – push-pull volume that switch between active or passive modes, balance between pickups, bass and treble pots. In passive mode treble pot serves as passive tone control. Electronics run from 9V battery that can be changed in few seconds because of easy access Gotoh BB-04 battery box.
All this can provide rich, full of harmonics sound as well as make this instrument very versatile with huge amount of tone possibilities starting from vintage type of jazz or motown sounds till modern rock and metal tones.

This is weird, but I don’t like it. What’s weird is that I can’t really say why. I don’t know if it’s the purple (and generally, I don’t have a problem with purple) or the body shape, or the headstock, or what… The backside woodgrain is gorgeous. I really do want to like this. I just don’t. To each his/her own, I guess. Maybe it’ll hit me what I don’t like about it in the middle of the night when I’m sleeping…
Anything “candy” or candy-like for the color is an acquired taste. It’s not for everyone, and that’s okay.
Beautiful bass. Great choice of tuner. I just installed the Gotoh 707s on two of my basses. Major tone improvement. Curious about the tuner placement. Possibly a more consistent string to string tension? Well done .

That bass is awesome! I love the neck design…smooth, sleek and well thought out. Great color too ( had a purple sunburst bass myself ). Great job!
I would prefer full reverse 5-in-line headstock.
