[Bass of the Week] Carrigan Scroll

This week’s bass guitar of the week is an “aggressive” 5-string fretless.

Buyer Mark Cook had Carrigan Designs custom bass guitars build his bass for him, and he writes:

I was interested in having a custom 5 string fretless built. The goal was create a bass with an aggressive edge, but warm sound. The hard part was finding a luthier who was flexible with options. I searched the web for a few months and eventually found Carrigan Designs. James Carrigan, the man behind Carrigan Designs, seemed to be the perfect choice. He was interested in building an instrument with details to meet a player’s needs. I had specific requests for wood choices, neck width, and electronics.

The final instrument is just what I was looking for. A fretless bass with presence and warm tone. The body core and neck are Honduran Mahogany. The top is Bocote with Black Walnut accents. Fretboard is Macassar Ebony with an epoxy finish. The input is Macassar Ebony and truss rod cover is Bocote. The electronics cavity is Cherry wood. Dual adjustment truss rod Schaller 3D bridge, Gotoh tuners. The electronics are passive custom wound Curtis Novak pickups. Each pickup has a volume and tone.

Here’s a sound demo of the bass (pretty cool!)

Definitely a solid bass with a good, solid sound to it. Well done!
