How to try a bass guitar at the guitar store

This is possibly the best instructional video on how to try a bass guitar at the guitar store.

Learn valuable testing skills such as “impress everyone with a Michael Jackson riff” and “drop that E like it’s hot”.

After watching this video, you too will become an expert bass guitar tester.

And please, show all the bassists you know this valuable information. Instructions like these are just too good to keep all to yourself.

  1. I’m assuming you are being facetious – never felt the need to ‘impress’ anyone in a music store. In fact, it’s one of the things I find annoying when I hear someone attempting to dazzle innocent bystanders with some flashy bs. Testing a bass is personal and I keep my volume low and I play something I know to hear a comparison. If it’s this baseline, so be it but I’m not looking around to see who notices.

    • What a trip. I was intending to write the same thing petty much word for word and my name is also Geo. In fact when I read the post I thought to myself, did I already respond to this video in the past and just forgot? Then I saw the date. Anyway, couldn’t have said it better myself.

  2. Totally righteous! Hey, for real, I had gone to Sam Ash in New York one time as we were passing through. While there I saw /heard a bass player just going for broke and to be honest I was impressed… as I paid for my token Sam Ash Memorabilia I mentioned to the salesman that the dude was quite gifted and I’ll never forget that he said the guy had never bought a single thing but had been in the store everyday for like the last five years straight jamming on gear… ( maybe hoping for his big break ). Maybe he needs some lessons from the guy in the video!

  3. TOO FUNNY! Any guys willing to admit to that being them at one time, like me! Yep, I was that guy years ago for sure. Haven’t improved much since. LOL! Just being honest.

  4. LOL! The guy was funny. But any accomplished bass player will agree that there’s no need to impress anyone. I like those closed booths that shops like Long and McQuade have so the rest of us don’t have to listen to all the loudest testers. My first testing out any stringed instrument is how is the action and feel. Then I’ll plug it in and do simple boogies, chromatic riffs, and a few bass lines that I’ve always loved–that allows me to compare it. From there on, our amp and pickup choices follow–we can crank it at home or at rehearsals!

  5. Based on how bad this is, I’m not sure if he’s ‘Fakin-it’?
In reality, there are a lot of musicians who try hard and ‘fake it till they make it (Or not!)
Either way, it’s better to learn to play an instrument than some other lame activity……
Even if you never put in the time to get it right (Like the rest of your life – keep learning!)
the ones who keep at it help promote the industry……
