As the old saying goes, clothes make the man. When it comes to bands, most just do the standard button-down shirt and jeans thing on stage (except for the drummer who usually wears shorts for more freedom of movement).
But then there are those who get into the game of same-look for all band members. Sometimes this works, sometimes not. However, unless someone can find something worse, it’s my sincere belief that Swedish dance band style from the 1970s is in fact the worst bands ever looked.
Now, to note, there are ways of having a uniform look in a way that looks correct. An example of uniform-look done right is The Pacifics:
These guys very purposely went for a 1960s clean-cut look, sweatervests and all. And it works. I’m not saying it will work for your band, but it works for them.
Does a uniform look really make a band stick out?
Unquestionably, yes.
Even if your band does something as simple as having every member wear a button-down or t-shirt of a specific color, you will get noticed above other bands because it basically offers the band a a single entity rather than “just 4 dudes on stage”, and people will identify with your act better as a result.
But don’t dress like a 70s Swedish dance band; that’s one to avoid. 🙂
The guys in the sweaters didn’t have mullets, so that kind of helped them I think.
But why did they need TWO bass players???
You’re saying that’s a bad thing?
Because look at the guy’s eyes on the far right! The other one is a backup!
They need two bass players to cover Spinal Tap’s huge hit Big Bottoms
It works???!!! Yeah if your a dork. Wide lapels feathered hair not even in the 70’s was this cool.
3 basses and you get “Big Bottom” by Spinal Tap.
Actually those that grew up in the 70’s remember the wide lapel and feathered hair look, and it was popular for a short period of time leading to the disco era. The homeless hipster look of today is just as bad. At least the guys with feathered hair look clean and can probably play their instruments and harmonize on key unlike todays bands.
My band wears costumes. We’ve had time-travel shows, zombie apocalypse shows, steampunk shows, and the Best Dressed Vest Fest Northwest. We’re currently preparing for a ninja-themed show…
Our fans and opening bands love it because they get to dress up too.
Thanks for the chuckle! The Swedish dance band looks hilarious and….can I have some of what the bass player with the Beatle Bass had? 🙂
Thanks for the chuckles. The Swedish dance band is hilarious! And, can I have some of what the Beatle Bass guy had? lol.
Actually, do a search for the Gert Jonnys and you’ll see worse outfits.
The guys in the sweaters look very much like the prison band on A wing at Dartmoor, the guy with the Hofner has just realised its shower time after the photos, if you know what I mean..
